Nokia N82 - Initial Thoughts and Design (Part 1)

Nokia N82 (Box Sleeve)

The Nokia N82 is a high-end Nseries device which packs in a 5 megapixel camera (with Carl Zeiss Lens), a Xenon flash (a first for Nokia) and built-in A-GPS. In short, the specs of the N82 are very similar to the N95 crammed into a candybar form factor.

I couldn’t decide when choosing a device whether to go for the N82 or the N95 8GB (I ended up choosing the N95 8GB) so it is great to experience the N82 for a couple of weeks and find out whether I ended up making the right decision!

More (including an unboxing video) after the break…

Not a bad attempt at a first unboxing video I hope!!!

The Nokia N82 is an extremely solid device and the build quality is fantastic. I cannot fault how well built the N82 is. It is exactly how every Nseries device should be. Being in candybar form factor with no moving parts like a slider helps this, but even so, Samsung manage to make solid sliders…. It is nice to go back to a device with this form factor and everything being accessible without having to slide/flip open the device to be able to use it. The N82 is also very compact and you could easily slip it into a pocket.

The N82 is also very nice to hold and fits perfectly in your hand, it is also very comfortable to use as the corners are rounded and don’t dig in. It has a 2.4″ screen like the N81 8GB and is really nice and crisp! Don’t get me wrong, the screen is a decent size and one you could easily live with, but I am a little disappointed that it wasn’t bigger.

I can see why it is only 2.4″, a bigger one one look ridiculous without changing the proportions of the device.

Nokia N82 (In the Hand)

I have the Titanium version of the N82 and it is very nice! The front of the device is shiny silver/beige in colour and can catch finger prints quite easily (especially around the screen). This is no issue though and a quick wipe with a soft cloth removes them easily.

The back of the device (the battery cover etc.) is constructed out of a beige coloured plastic and has a grooved-like pattern (which is actually smooth!) It looks great! The camera surround is made from metal (I think) and contrasts really well.

Nokia N82 (Back Cover)

I wasn’t sure at how useable the small buttons of the keypad on the N82 would be, and was really surprised! I really like the keypad of the N82 (allthough I can understand why some people don’t). The buttons are small, but they are spaced out enough so that you aren’t likely to press another and I could text just as easily and quickly as I could using the keypad of my N95 8GB.

Nokia N82 (Keypad)

There is only one issue I think with the N82’s keypad and that is the multimedia key… I think it is a little too close to the right softkey above it and can occasionally be pressed by mistake. I think if the top two softkeys were marginally bigger, it would solve this issue, but it is something you get used to and won’t cause too much of a problem!

Another thing you will notice (by looking at the images below) is that the charger connector and micro usb connection have been put on the left-hand side instead of the bottom. The bottom now just hold the microphone. This doesn’t affect useability at all (I don’t think), and I didnt find any issues with it being this way.

A big improvement in terms of design (over the N95 and N95 8GB) is that the 3.5mm audio jack is on the top of the device next to the power key (just like the Nokia N81 8GB). You can use the N82 just like a standard portable music player by popping earphones in and out of the top without having the cable sticking out of the side!

Here are some photos of the Nokia N82 and comparison against other devices!

  1. I have been considering this phone, and I think you just pushed me over the edge. I am going to get one. Great review by the way, and ya that unboxing vid was top notch..

  2. Thank you very much, I appreciate your comments!
Hopefully, when I get used to doing videos, they will be better so stay tuned!
The N82 is a great device, but if you want to know more before going and getting one, I will be posting about it over the next week!

If you get one, don’t forget to come back and share your thoughts with us!

  3. Howdy!! Just found this site by accident.
    Pretty cool site dude.
Lol I have had the N82 for just over 5 weeks now.
    1 Word: Brilliant.
The battery life could be improved and yes its still buggy but other than that it is easily the best phone in the market right now.
I would say it beats n96 too, the n82 has xenon, unfortunately the n96 doesn’t a big letdown I say.
    How’s your review handset goin?

  4. Hi! Thanks a lot!

Glad to hear you like your N82! I agree, it is a great little device! Really enjoying it!
I hope the new firmware is released when I still have it so I can experience the built in geotagging function pictures taken and hope that they also include Flash Lite 3. Can’t see that happening though! Not in the next firmware anyway!

I was a little disappointed with the N96 when it was announced (and would much prefer a xenon flash over dual LED) but I would love to see just how good it is and how much it has improved over the N82 and N95 series with what it has got (and experience the new Feature Pack 2!)
