Using the built-in IM client installed on Unlocked and Unbranded Devices

The ‘IM’ client that can be found on most Unlocked and Unbranded Nseries devices (as well as others) isn’t very widely used at all, but it is a fantastic instant messaging application thats is really well integrated into your S60 device. In my opinion, it is the best instant messaging application that I have used.

To be more accurate, the IM client in S60 devices allows you to connect to a ‘wireless village’ - basically an IMPS server which can link your device to different instant messaging services.

Many people BETA tested a service called Packetbox a few months ago which let you use this IM application to chat to your friends on MSN and other messengers. Unfortunately this service was ‘temporarily’ shut down and no news has been heard about it since leaving many users confused…

Drum roll please… enter Mobjab!!!

*** Update: I have spoken to a member of the Mobjab team and I have an updated server address to resolve some operator issues regarding server timeouts.

EXISTING USERS, PLEASE CHANGE YOUR SERVER ADDRESS from: http://mobjab.mobi:9090 to http://mobjab.mobi as soon as possible.

The old address will be made non functional from the 30th June 2008. New users can follow the revised instructions by reading the tutorial in this post.

I have also been informed that Gmail and Jabber support will be added soon!!!

Mobjab is a new service that has been launched. It is very similar to Packetbox and by signing up via their website (it is completly free by the way!) you will be able to connect to IM gateways such as AOL IM, Windows Live Messenger, Yahoo! Messenger, YIM and ICQ.

You can sign up to Mobjab by using the following link:
http://www.mobjab.com/register/

Setting up the IM client is easy! If you havn’t set up a connection before, you will be prompted when you start the IM application to define a server (as shown above). If you are not shown this screen, you can enter the relevant details by choosing ‘Options, Settings, Server Settings, Servers’ and then ’Options and New Server’.

You should then be shown the above screen where you can enter the information needed so that your handset can connect to the server and your messaging service. Enter the Server name and Web address as it is above. Your access point will be different, select the one that you want to use.

You can now also use a Wi-fi connection through the IM client!!! Thanks to Paul for pointing this out:

Copy an existing packet data access point, rename it to say “IM Connection”, then go to the IM settings and select the access point setting for connecting to the IM client. Go back to your phones connection settings and change the “IM Connection” from packet data to Wi-fi. Now the IM client should connect via Wi-fi instead of packet data.

The User ID and Password MUST be the one you created when signing up to Mobjab. You entered your instant messaging details and passwords when you signed up. When you have done this, you should be good to go!

I have only tested Windows Live Messenger with the Mobjab service, so my experience will be based on this provider. You can also run multiple instant messaging services at the same time through the IM client - this should be set up through the Mobjab website.

When you have connected, your contacts should appear within the IM contacts tab. Their online/offline status is shown by a green person (signalling they are online) and a grey person when they are offline. Your online status, which can be changed within the options menu, is shown as the application logo (again by a green or grey person).

The conversation window is very simple. with a huge area to view the conversation. Incoming messages are indicated with an arrow pointing to the right, whereas messages you send (outgoing messages) are indicated with an arrow to the left. The address/contact name of the person you are talking to appears at the top of the screen. You can even add emoticons to messages on the screen, and there is a good selection to choose from.

It is also possible to have multiple conversations happening with people. Each conversation is listed within the ‘Conversation’ tab and is easy to access.

The application itself has a simple and easy to use interface. One of the things I mentioned at the start of this post is how well integrated the IM application is. As you can see, it will use whatever theme your device is using (if you like customising the look and feel of your device), and you can leave the IM application connected and running in the background. When you receive a message from somebody, you are alerted just as you would if you received a text message. You can also assign a message tone of your choice for whenever a message is received. This functionality alone makes the instant messaging experience of this application streets ahead of the rest.

Mobjab seems to be much more stable than Packetbox ever was, and messages are sent and received with no delay at all. Contacts are also loaded quickly without any issues. I am really impressed by the speed of the service and I hope that it continues to be a success!

I recommend you all trying out the Mobjab service if you like to use Instant Messaging, and tell us what you think!

How has your experience been?

  1. Hey awesome, I have been wondering how to set this app up for a year!

The question is does it chew through the battery when running in the background like fring for example - because it would be fantastic to keep it on all day.

  2. Hi!

I havn’t noticed a dramatic decrease in battery life at all when in use (in my experience)!
If you decide to give it a go, please come back and tell us what experience you have had with battery consumption!

    Thanks for visiting!!!

  3. Just as a side note it is possible to use WIFI with IM if you have Psiloc Connect. Works great on my N82. Now I won’t have to pay Microsoft £1.50 a month to use their client. Thanks for the heads up!

  4. I honestly don’t know :(
I’d assume that you would still only be able to use network connections because this is what the IM application looks to use…

    No problem!

  5. It’s unfortunate that this does not support Google talk. For the record Auntiewiv, you wouldn’t need to pay MS for their client anyway. Just use one of the many excellent multiprotocol clients out there (nimbuzz is my personal favorite).

  6. @Auntiewiv - I also use Psiloc Connect but haven’t been able to get it to work with Mobjab. Within Mobjab app, when I configure the Access Point to use, the only options I’m given are GPRS ones.

How did you manage to get Mobjab to use Psiloc access point?

    Thanks!

  7. I’ve loaded all the settings and logged into my old ICQ account and it works well except that only the user ID numbers of my contacts are displayed, and not their user names. Thats a bit of a pain because I dont know who’s who.
Nice to know that this IM application actually DOES something, although I wont use it until I can also load Skype Chat and Google Talk. Think we’ll have to wait another coupla years?

  8. Unfortunately I did not get it to work on my E90 with Yahoo Messenger. A shame. I would have loved to use the built IM client. Anyone else had problems with Yahoo?

  9. I consider it a rather pointless app if we cant use wifi. Again to put more money into networks pockets.

  10. To all of you who wish to use WiFi:

Can i use Wi-Fi as the Access point for the IMPS client?

Yes you can. The way round it is to copy a existing packet data access point, rename it to say “IM connection”, then go to the IM settings and select that access point setting for connecting to the IM client. Then go back to your phones connection settings and change the “IM connection” from packet data to Wi-Fi. Now your IM client should connect via Wi-Fi instead of packet data.

Helps to read the FAQ on their website :P

  11. This is another battery zapper. It wont last running it the background all day on my N95, just as with Fring. I am only using a 3G data connection (a roaming connection costs heaps with my carrier) - what are other peoples experiences? Is GPRS a lot better?

  12. I think I got my IM username/password wrong for one or two of the services…anyone know how to change them? I don’t see anything on their web site :|

  13. doesnt work for me on e90, seams to connect then not show anything except deafult 0/0 and my own availability.
used with wifi and gprs. anyone got any ideas?

  14. yea im having the same problem on the n95. Anyone worked out a fix yet?

  15. Same problem for me, anyone got any ideas?

Logs in and everything fine, but doesn’t show any of my contacts.

  16. I could of sworn I had the chat app on my E61i. Did this go away with the version 3 firmware update or am I imagining it?

  17. This is really strange… I would have thought (as long as all settings have been entered correctly) that no matter what phone you were on should work fine :S

It is still working for me with no problems at all at the moment… If anyone comes up with a solution for the others that would be great!!! Is it that only certain devices are having issues???

  18. @A Prodigal reader.

I’m using the built in IM client on my nokia N82 and Psiloc Connect is one of the available access points.

I haven’t tried the Mobjab client yet.

  19. Hi

    Regarding the contacts not shown:

After i login to MobJab I dont see my contacts/buddies?

You would require to change/update your presence to “Available/Online” and then your contacts/buddies will be displayed. For SonyEricsson handsets you need to select “Watching Users” to see your contacts and then add them from there (Thanks to Eric Strebel for pointing this out).

After i login to MobJab I dont see my external networks contacts/buddies?

When you first login to your MobJab account after you have added AIM/MSN/Yahoo/ICQ external networks in your account you would get a presence message from the server asking your authorisation that if you want to add your buddy on the external network to your buddy list and subscribe to his presence. You need to add and authorise and subscribe to presence of the external transports buddies. Else you wont see the external buddies presence.

    Regards
    Team@MobJab

  20. @MobJab
ive done all the things said on your website, which is where that response is taken from.

it connects and if im logged in with a different client i get logged out of msn, so it connects to the msn server but downloading of contacts fails.

maybe its to do with my contact list over 200 i think

  21. Hi Steff

To be honest 200 contacts would be 2 much for any mobile phone to handle. Would suggest you create a new MSN ID and add only the contacts which you need to chat via your IMPS client.

Regarding contacts not showing online. Is this on any specific external IM? We have found a bug on Yahoo Messenger where the contacts prsence is not getting relayed properly on N95 with specific firmware.

    Team@MobJab

  22. I can’t retrieve my contacts from Yahoo, although I selected “watching user”. I didn’t get the authorise and subscibe messages too. I’m using SE K530i

  23. I am encountering problems attempting to set my account up to work with AIM. When attempting to connect, I get the following message from aim.mobjab.mobi:

“Sorry, you do not appear to be registered with this transport. Please register and try again.”

I assumed that I had perhaps put in my AIM password incorrectly, so I registered again and - same result. I am sure I am putting in my username and password for AIM correctly during the mobjab registration process, I can’t help but think this might have something to do with the fact that my AIM screen name has a “@” sign in it (it’s my personal domain email address)?

  24. Hi

Regarding Yahoo Contacts not showing online. There is a bug which we are trying to fix at our side. The presence/status on yahoo is not getting properly relayed on the IMPS client. Chatting between IMPS client and Yahoo Messenger happens smoothly.

But I have found nothing but the beep

    @MobJab, @JamesPowell
    Can u help?

I’m using IM on my Nokia E61i and Yahoo

  31. Hi.

I havn’t had this problem myself but I have only used MSN/Windows Live Messenger…
So that Mobjab can resolve these issues as soon as possible, you can email your problems and feedback to: info@mobjab.com

By using this address you will also get a much faster response from a member of the team and hopefully it will be resolved for you.

    Hope this helps slightly!!!

if you have added manually then the mobile2email feature gets activated. hence your buddies get the chat message in their email box

Question2: I’m not able to receive any messages sent to me when im logged in to My Friends. maybe you could tell me what i’ve configured wrong? Much thanks!

Did you register your external IM that is yahoo account of yours while regestring for your mobjab account?

    @bryan and aris

There is a bug on a specific version of the IMPS client on nokia. N-95 and E-62 we are aware about. I belive we need to add E61i to the list of handsets which has this problem specifically with yahoo.

  39. Hey all, can someone help me plz? I’ve signed up, but trying to sign up using the MSN for Hotmail… i know i put in the right details, but it wont load, it goes to ‘trying to register’ with the msn but wont go past that?? any help plz?

  40. NVM xD
I got it all to work out just fine, happily chatting away with my msn buddies FTW!! Great work Mobjab, I couldnt be happier!!

  41. Okay god this is pissing me off to no end, sure the chat works and all. very happy still. but somtimes ppl arent on or the ones that are. ARE annoying. lol. how the hell do you hadd group ID? on thewebsite says add 1. Australia.. tried everything and not a damn thing.. come on..

  42. I don’t have an Nseries phone but I do need help with my Mobjab account. I am using an SE K610i for Mobjab and have 2 accounts. The older one has no external im accounts and it is working fine. I registered my msn, yahoo, icq, and gtalk im’s with the newer one a week ago.

At first I get online only on the msn and aim transport and everything was fine except that I don’t see my im contact list even when I use watching users. I have to wait for them to initiate a conversation before I can add them. Then when I got online on yahoo a few days ago, I stopped receiving all my messages, even from my mobjab contacts. I can still see aim and msn presence but not with yahoo. I can send messages fine but I am not getting any of the replies. Could you please look into this. The account ID is kulas. Thank you for the great job so far.

P.S When I started getting online on yahoo, I could now see all my contacts appears when I use watching users. Thanks again.

  43. Which is the point in using these Mobjab/Yamigo services? Why not accessing gtalk/aim/msn directly?

  44. @kulas

There were some 125 messages stuck in your account waiting to be delivered to your handset. have delted those messages.

Also your account got stuck in the spam listing also.

The group you created had 183 messages stuck there.

can you check now if the issue remains? also how many contacts you got on all the 4 external IMs you registered.

    @scotty

Just type in the group name and you will have the group room avaiable on your handset.

    Team@MobJab

  45. dear mobjab team….
i’ve the same problem with the others..
i can’t registered to external IM?? it takes a long time to wait…
please check my ID : ai

  48. Dear Mobjab,

I have Mobjab working with AIM. However, from the Weblient->Account->Manage Service, I see that AIM Transport appears 4 times. When using IM on my device, I see the senders message 4 times! I suspect my multiple attempts at registering with AIM is the reason. However, I do not seem to be able to remove the extra transports?? Please advise.

  49. I am having the same issue as Kermit. In addition, Yahoo doesn’t connect, nor am I able to change anything for it in the Manager.
Another annoying issue is the “Subscription Request” popups. I keep getting them every time I sign in, and I have to start from scratch.

  50. my yahoo doesn’t seem to be connected… only AIM working.. but the message are sent twice.. ??

  51. Hi all;

I can’t find a way to add my gmail account (XMPP-GTalk)
The protocol just don’t appear when I login with “My Account/Manage Service”
I don’t know how to fix this - Please advise
