The Nokia N78 has made it to Talk About Nseries after being sent to the wrong depot by DHL! Thanks to WomWorld for allowing us to trial this device! We have received the version with the Cocoa Brown back, you can also get the N78 with a Blue or White backing.
The N78 is the latest ‘entry level’ Nseries device from Nokia, and it packs in all the features you would expect from an Nseries device, as well as many more!!!
It is also the first device on the market at the moment to feature S60 Feature Pack 2, and so far I am really impressed with the improvements that have been made!
The N78 is presented in the usual way, no changes have been made here! Inside the box you can expect to find:
- Nokia N78
- BL-6F battery
- Charger
- 2GB MicroSD card preinstalled and microSD-SD adaptor
- Nokia Music Headset
- Nokia Connectivity Cable ( microUSB-USB connection)
- User Guides and CD
The first impression I had of the device when I picked it up was how lightweight and thin it felt in the hand! It is just right if you would like to slip the device into your pocket and it will not stick out at all.
The N78, like the N82 is a really solid device and the build quality is generally very good with no creaking. There is a slight ‘fault’ on our review device with the back cover - there is a bit of play where it doesn’t quite lie flat in the centre. I am informed however that adjustments to improve the back cover have been made and they are already in production.
The device uses the new Nseries design language that was first introduced with the N81. The same glossy black plastic has also been used on the face of the device (which on the N81 I thought looked ‘cheap’). I am pleased to say that with the N78 I think it is great, however, it is a fingerprint magnet - and it shows!!! I also like the grooved effect a lot which has been used on the back cover, similar to that on the N82. However, neither will be to everyones taste!!!
The N78 looks really sleek because all of the keys (with exception to the number pad) on the face are all on one level and aren’t defined. To look at you would think they are touch sensitive, but you actually press the areas where there is a button just as you would if they were proper keys.
The number pad itself is made up of four solid horizontal bars and are also reletively small. More on that in another part!
You also get a standard 3.5mm audio jack on the top of the device, but unlike the N82 and N95 it cannot be used for TV-Out. There are 2 stereo speakers, one on the top right and another on the bottom left which is unusual, but has been designed this way so that they are as far away from each other as possible. This should increase the stereo performance.
Here are some side-by-side images next to the Nokia N82, as you can see, their dimensions are very similar with the N82 being slightly thicker.
More coverage of the N78 to come soon!!! I hope to get as much content as possible live for you all to see - as there are now two of us, we can both focus on different aspects of this so far promising device!!!

I work in a Nokia store in the UK, and we’ve had this phone for about a week. I really like it. It’s lightweight, I like the colour and don’t mind the design and layout, but the N82 camera is so much better, and I think N Series devices should really have camera protectors now. Some form of shutter to make sure the lens doesn’t get scratched in a pocket is a must for me. Needless to say, I won’t be downgrading to this from my N82.
