Nokia N85 - The Facts

Remember the rumoured Nokia N85 that was leaked not so long ago!? Well earlier today a User Agent Profile posted by Nokia confirmed the devices existence and revealed its true specifications!

First impressions, i’m a little disappointed. Nothing noticeable about it so far brings anything new/unique to the portfolio and seems to be a midrange N96. However, I think it is great that Nokia are releasing devices with similar features and at a range of price points (as well as in a range of form factors to choose from).

The release of this information suggests that the device should be announced relatively soon!!!

Read on for more details, thoughts and a link to the profile!!!

The N85 carries on with the design language introduced by the N81 and followed with the N78 and N96 and still makes use of a QVGA 240 x 320 pixel screen. What I found surprising is that Nokia have decided to use a 3.2 megapixel camera. *Update: The megapixel count of the camera still isn’t confirmed.

From the pictures that were leaked the N85 will have a dual LED flash (much like the N96) and a camera shutter to protect the lens.

The device will run on Symbian S60 Feature Pack 2 and features the usual connectivity options - GPRS, EDGE, UMTS, Wifi and HSDPA as well as built-in GPS.

Overall, as I mentioned in the introduction to this post, the device seems to be a midrange N96 aimed at the mass market. Even though no there is nothing new included in the specs of the N85, it will be interesting to see how well the device performs and what enhancements have been made.

Heres a link to the profile so you can view the full specification list for yourself!

Could the N85 be what the N81 should have been, have the N-Gage application preloaded and be the gaming device to launch the N-Gage service publically to the masses???

The dual slide form factor could easily cater for dedicated gaming keys as well (just like the N96).

What do you think???

  1. (MmsMaxImageResolution: 2048×1536) that’s meaning 3.2mp .. yeah that’s right..

but that does not mean that the camera 3.2MP .. ever! .. look at the pictures .. obviously 5MP :)

  2. You’re right! I’ve looked at the profiles of the N96 and the N82 and it says exactly the same thing…

There could still be a 5mp in there!!! Thanks for the comment!

  3. Hello Everyone -

Granted, this post is about the N85, but I noticed that the strong rumors are that the N85 will also be based on Series 60 Feature Pack 2 (S60 3.2).

S60 3.2 also drives the N78 and N96. I really wanted to buy an N78 only to become very disappointed (after hours of research) to learn that VoIP programs that once relied on Nokia’s inclusion of VoIP software in Symbian Series 60 has been REDACTED from Series 60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 2. Have a look at this Nokia Developer Forum thread, with this excerpt:

This really sucks for a company (Nokia) that is purporting to claim a lot of hype by allegedly releasing all of the Symbian software into an independent open source Symbian Foundation.

So does this mean that all of the new phones from Nokia in the N series, etc. are all going to be incapable of VoIP (or actually, they might be capable but Nokia has intentionally handicapped them and forcing the VoIP support to be written from scratch by the developer community instead of Nokia *SHARING* that VoIP software WITH the developer community in the spirit of open source? It is very sad to me that I can not use a Nokia N78 with Truphone or Gizmo, etc. over WiFi. It doesn’t make sense to me that the wireless telecos would force Nokia to redact VoIP because the N78 can be purchased unlocked unbranded at Nokia Flagship stores at least in the U.S. (Chicago and New York City).
